Turun Teknologiakiinteistöt is developing the AkvaCity building in Itäharju, which will be leased by Turun Vesihuolto Oy. The building's foundation stone was laid on Thursday, October 3rd, and the same event served as the topping-out ceremony for the building.
Noin 2400 neliömetrin kokoinen AkvaCity toteutetaan Itäharjulle osoitteeseen Teollisuuskatu 46. Hanke käsittää kaksi erillistä rakennusta, joista toiseen tulee toimisto- ja sosiaalitiloja ja toiseen teolliseen toimintaan soveltuvaa tilaa. Lisäksi tonteille rakennetaan parkkipaikkoja sekä vehreä piha-alue ja varastorakennus. Työtiloja AkvaCityyn tulee noin 80 ihmiselle.
The combined foundation stone laying and topping-out ceremony held on Thursday, October 3rd, featured greetings from Turun Teknologiakiinteistöt's Head of Development Miika Tuominen, Turku City Council Chair Mika Maaskola, Turun Vesihuolto CEO Irina Nordman, and construction company Jatke Länsi-Suomi's Petri Reunanen. The site staff did not wish to speak on this occasion.
Turun Teknologiakiinteistöt's Head of Development Miika Tuominen emphasized the building's environmental values in his speech.
– Teknologiakiinteistöt's first wooden building is finally under construction. The main construction material of AkvaCity is robust, environmentally friendly Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), which consists of cross-laminated wood layers.
Turku City Council Chair Mika Maaskola highlighted the city's future development in the Science Park and Itäharju in his speech.
– The AkvaCity building is beautiful and modern, and it serves excellently as a flagship for the area. Just like Turku Energia, Turun Vesihuolto also acts as a shining example for other companies considering the location of their new premises.

Turun Vesihuolto has long traditions in Halinen, a fact also emphasized by the company's CEO, Irina Nordman, in her speech.
– The new facility finally brings all of Vesihuolto's operations together, which is a positive renewal for us. Although Vesihuolto has a long history in Halinen, moving forward we will get to create new traditions here in the Science Park and Itäharju. AkvaCity is centrally located, and for us, it is a symbol of a new era and action, which also raises the profile of the entire area.
Greetings from the construction company Jatke were brought by Länsi-Suomi CEO Petri Reunanen.
– AkvaCity is a fantastic project for Jatke, and it is great that we get to be involved in its realization. Construction is on schedule, and it will be ready in the spring, Reunanen continued, thanking the builders.
During the event, a metal cylinder was encased in the floor for future generations, containing information about the building project, current coins, and the day's Turun Sanomat newspaper reflecting the current era. Also sealed in the cylinder were a map extract of the area, the Vesihuolto customer magazine, a 1952 edition of Turun Sanomat detailing the construction of Vesihuolto's Halinen facility, and a bottle containing water directly from Halinen.
The architectural design of AkvaCity was created by the architectural firm Sarc + Sigge. The contractor for the project is Jatke Länsi-Suomi Oy. The building is being developed according to the LEED v4 Platinum level, which means that the building's environmental impact and energy consumption are aimed to be minimized throughout its entire life cycle.
After lunch, guests went on a tour of the AkvaCity construction site. Singer-pianist Eveliina Jaatinen performed at the event.
