Foundation stone of GeneCity laid

The foundation stone for the GeneCity building, developed by Turun Teknologiakiinteistöt, was laid on Thursday, Nov 2. GeneCity is a pharmaceutical plant that Turun Teknologiakiinteistöt is implementing for the biological drug contract manufacturer Biovian Oy.

The approximately 6,300 square meter GeneCity is being built in the Itäharju district at Teollisuuskatu 42. The project consists of a single-story production facility, lobby and office spaces spread over three floors, and social, storage, and utility rooms in the building's basement. The building will be completed at the end of 2024.

Biovian, the future occupant of GeneCity, is one of the most significant biotech players in the Turku region, employing nearly 200 people. Currently, Biovian is a customer of Turun Teknologiakiinteistöt in BioCity, PharmaCity, and ElectroCity, where it occupies approximately 5,100 square meters of production and office space.

Speakers at the foundation stone ceremony held on Thursday, Nov 2, included Mayor of Turku Minna Arve, Construction Director of Turun Teknologiakiinteistöt Miika Tuominen, CEO of Rakennustoimisto Lundén Janne Lundén, and CEO of Biovian Antti Nieminen.

Biovian, the future occupant of GeneCity, is one of the most significant biotech players in the Turku region.

During the event, a metal cylinder was encased in the floor for future generations. Inside it are information about the construction project, the day's issue of Turun Sanomat newspaper to capture the spirit of the times, coins, a list of event participants, a photograph of the Biovian staff, and laboratory supplies used at the pharmaceutical plant.

The architectural design for GeneCity was provided by Sigge Arkkitehdit Oy. The building's cleanroom was designed by Elomatic Solutions Oy, which is also responsible for its implementation. The contractor for the project is Rakennustoimisto Lundén Oy. The building is being constructed in accordance with the LEED v4 Platinum level, meaning the goal is to minimize the property's environmental impact and energy consumption throughout its entire lifecycle.
